We were tasked with analysing a game of our choice and discussing its essential experience, by talking about a moment in which the games core really stood out.

I chose do to this on the Outer Wilds by Mobius Digital.

I theorised that the games essential experience was one of gaining knowledge, as the games revolves around learning about the solar system in order to progress the story.

My one minute essential experience on The Outer Wilds - All footage recorded by myself in The Outer Wilds - Edited in Adobe Premiere

Updated: Jan 25, 2021

Based on Kaja's one minute essential experience

What do we assume was the essential experience intended by the game designer as we perceive it from the trailer?

The outer worlds is a sci fi role playing action game, which focuses on a dystopian society run by late stage capitalism

Which aspects of the lenses do we think are most prevalent in the essential experience for the game from what we can perceive from the trailer?

From Kaja’s one minute essential experience the lens of beauty is shown heavily, talking about the beauty of the world building and environment. It also describes the cast of deep and relatable characters, which is in my opinion a form of beauty in character design and personality.

It also utilizes the lens of projection, describing the RPG elements, which allow the player to implement themselves in the game or project onto the character they create as well as mentioning the characters they might like to meet, and the fantastical sci fi locations players can visit.

The lens of inherent interest is aso at play, as the sci fi setting may appeal to some players, along with the post capitalism dystopia being an interesting concept to explore

For this semester I intend to primarily develop my Unity and C# scripting abilities, with the end goal of being able to make at least rudimentary prototypes of my design concepts. I plan to split this into two basic unity projects, focusing on different areas.

Firstly, UI, from my current plans for my games essential experience, I suspect UI and the presentation of information and story will take a more significant role than gameplay, thus making it an important focus for my self development.

Secondly, build a movement system that includes a dash, or modify James premade movement script; I think this will help me understand vectors and programing movement.

As a second development goal I would also like to improve my 3d modelling abilities, currently I feel that I am fairly confident with hard surface modelling in blender, so I plan to focus particularly on rigging and animation.

Part 1 - Self Development - UI

End Goal : begin work on a UI that allows for:

UI Windows that can be opened and closed

Choosing dialog options

Dragging windows around the game view.

How to Achieve this

Week 1: Before starting to build the UI I will first brush up on Unity, I feel that I am weakest at scripting, which I had difficulty with last year, while use of the Unity engine came fairly naturally
